The Chautauqua County community is mourning the deaths of Alexander D. Morelli, 23, of Meadville, Pennsylvania, and Doug A. Griffith, 51, of Massena, New York, following a fatal motor vehicle accident on Route 430 in the Town of Chautauqua on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the crash at approximately 3:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a motor vehicle accident involving injuries. Members of the North Lake Fire Department, Sherman Fire Department and Chautauqua County EMS also responded to assist at the scene.
Route 430 Crash
Investigators said Morelli was traveling eastbound on Route 430 when his vehicle failed to keep right and crossed the center line. The vehicle subsequently collided with another vehicle traveling westbound.
The westbound vehicle was being operated by Griffith, according to authorities. The impact caused fatal injuries to both drivers.
Morelli, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. Griffith, 51, was also pronounced dead at the crash site.
The circumstances of the collision were investigated by the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, with emergency personnel from several agencies assisting at the scene.
