It is with deep sadness that the family of John Joseph McNamara, 88, of Exton, Pennsylvania, announces his passing on August 18, 2026. John’s death marks the loss of a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, great-grandfather, decorated United States Navy veteran, and a respected member of the communities he served throughout his remarkable life.
John was the beloved husband of Kathleen V. (McManus) McNamara, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Rose (Proesl) McNamara. Throughout his life, John was surrounded by family, faith, friendship, and a deep commitment to serving others.
He leaves behind his five children: Rose McEwen, Christopher (Lisa) McNamara, Erin (Robert) Miller, Sean (Maria) McNamara, and Mary (Brion) Maguire. He was a proud grandfather to Ryan (Stephanie), Dylan (Ellie), Shane, Quentin (Jorah), Kathleen, Rionach, Riley, Brendan, Conall, Declan, Jane, and Maeve, and a loving great-grandfather to Logan and Austin McNamara.
John’s life was defined by dedication, service, and a strong sense of responsibility. He was a graduate of St. Frances de Sales Parish School in West Philadelphia, West Catholic High School for Boys, Class of 1956, and St. Joseph’s University. He later earned a graduate degree from The University of Maryland, continuing his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and personal growth.
A proud member of the United States Navy, John served for 20 years, traveling across the world aboard the USS Hugh Purvis and serving in various locations along the East Coast, including Newport, Rhode Island, and Charleston, South Carolina. His service also included work at The Pentagon and teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. He retired from the Navy in 1980 with the rank of Commander, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and honor.
Following his military career, John continued serving his community as the Assistant Director of Chester County Emergency Services in West Chester, where he spent 25 years helping others and building lasting friendships with coworkers and community members. After retiring from the county, John remained active and became an opening attendant at the Lionville YMCA, where he continued to connect with people and create new friendships.
John was a faithful member of Sts. Philip and James Parish in Exton since 1977. His involvement included participation in the choir, prayer groups, home and school activities, collection duties, and parish variety shows, where he created many cherished memories. He was also a member of Exton Knights of Columbus Council #5671, where he achieved the distinction of Fourth Degree Knight, and was involved with the Ancient Order of Hibernians in West Chester.
Beyond his professional and community service, John was known for his energy, humor, and love of life. He enjoyed running, swimming, history, reading, Notre Dame football, Philadelphia sports, Irish music, and celebrating his Irish heritage. Friends and family will remember his joyful personality, his love of singing, and his ability to bring warmth and laughter wherever he went.
John had a special gift for making ordinary moments memorable. Whether singing in the kitchen, working in the garden, sharing stories, or enjoying time with loved ones, he embraced life with enthusiasm. His “whistle while you work” spirit reflected the positivity and kindness that defined him.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Kevin McEwen, his brother James McNamara, and members of the McManus, Brady, and McLaughlin families.
John’s passing leaves a profound emptiness for his family, friends, former colleagues, fellow veterans, parish community, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service, faith, family devotion, and kindness will continue through the many lives he touched.
Funeral services will include a viewing on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Logan Funeral Home, Inc., 698 E. Lincoln Highway, Exton, PA 19341, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at Sts. Philip and James Parish, 723 Lincoln Highway, Exton, PA 19341. Interment will take place at St. Agnes Cemetery in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 5300 Chester Avenue, Philadelphia, PA.
John Joseph McNamara will be remembered as a devoted family man, a faithful servant, a respected military leader, and a friend to many. His memory will continue to live on through the stories, lessons, and love he leaves behind.
