Authorities are searching for two suspects following a deadly shooting early Wednesday, August 19, 2026, in southern Pima County that left 23-year-old Carlos Ramirez, a Tucson Police Department recruit and former Pima County Sheriff’s Department corrections officer, dead. Ramirez’s fiancée, who is also a current Pima County corrections officer, was injured in the shooting and transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded at approximately 6 a.m. to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 7700 block of South Enchanted Spring Drive, near Valencia Road and State Route 86/Ajo Highway.
When deputies arrived, they found Ramirez suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the response of authorities, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the local law enforcement community, particularly because Ramirez was in the process of becoming a Tucson police officer and had previously served with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos acknowledged the profound impact of the incident on law enforcement personnel and their families, emphasizing that the loss extends throughout the broader public safety community.
Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto also described Ramirez’s death as a tragic event and a tremendous loss for the department, the city and the community. Authorities are urging anyone who may have information about the shooting to contact 911.
Carlos Ramirez Remembered by Tucson Police Department
Ramirez was a member of Tucson Police Department Basic Recruit Class 26-1. According to the department, he had completed 23 weeks of training at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center and was scheduled to graduate from the academy on August 27, 2026.
His death came just days before what would have been a significant milestone in his law enforcement career.
The Tucson Police Department said Ramirez’s death has been deeply felt by his classmates, instructors and academy staff. The department also expressed condolences to his family, loved ones and fiancée as they cope with the devastating loss.
For those who trained alongside Ramirez, the shooting represents not only the loss of a colleague but also the loss of someone with whom they had shared months of preparation, challenges and aspirations for a career in law enforcement.
Pima County Shooting Investigation
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the shooting. Tucson police remain in contact with sheriff’s investigators and have indicated that they are prepared to provide assistance as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the shooting, and additional details about what led to the incident remain under investigation.
Detectives are searching for two suspects described as Hispanic men who were reportedly wearing all-black clothing and ski masks at the time of the shooting.
Investigators believe the suspects may have been traveling in a gray 2007–2013 Acura MDX. Authorities said the vehicle may be identifiable by a missing fuel door.
Because the investigation remains active, authorities have urged members of the public not to approach or confront anyone they believe may be connected to the shooting.
Authorities Seek Information
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting, has information about the suspects or recognizes the described Acura MDX to contact 911.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify and locate the two suspects responsible for the reported shooting.
Ramirez’s death has left his family, fiancée, fellow law enforcement officers, academy classmates and the wider Tucson community grieving. His planned graduation from the police academy was only days away, making the loss especially painful for those who had watched him work toward a career in public service.
As investigators continue searching for answers, law enforcement officials are asking the public to remain alert and provide any information that could help bring those responsible to justice.
