The Milligan University community is mourning after a devastating crash in Carter County, Tennessee, claimed the lives of two student cyclists and left several others seriously injured. The tragedy occurred Wednesday morning when a vehicle struck members of the university’s cycling team while they were riding along U.S. Highway 19E near Simerly Creek Road.

According to authorities, the crash happened at approximately 9:02 a.m. and involved a vehicle and a group of about 10 cyclists. The incident has sent shockwaves through the university community, leaving students, faculty, teammates, and loved ones grieving the sudden loss of two young lives.

The students killed in the crash were identified by Milligan University as sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rodgers. Their deaths have left family members, friends, teammates, and the wider cycling community heartbroken.

What Happened Before the Collision

Court documents released following the investigation provide details about the moments leading up to the crash.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Tennessee Highway Patrol investigators said the cyclists were struck by a 2003 Subaru Baja Sport driven by John Alexander Benfield, 69, of North Carolina.

Investigators allege that Benfield was traveling in the outside lane behind another vehicle when the vehicle ahead moved into the inside lane. The affidavit states that Benfield then failed to recognize the group of cyclists traveling ahead in the same lane.

Authorities said investigators found no physical evidence indicating that Benfield applied the brakes or made an evasive maneuver before striking the cyclists. The affidavit alleges that the vehicle continued forward into the group, resulting in a mass-casualty crash.

Charges Filed in Connection With Crash

Benfield has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness, according to District Attorney Steve Finney.

Officials stated that additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues.

Court records indicate that Benfield’s bond was set at $150,000.

Injuries Reported After the Crash

Authorities reported that two cyclists were pronounced dead at the scene, while five others suffered serious or critical injuries.

Following the collision, seven individuals were transported to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment. Medical officials reported that several victims were receiving intensive care, with some patients listed in stable condition while others remained under medical supervision.

The injuries have added to the grief surrounding the incident as the Milligan community continues to support those recovering from the crash.

Investigation Continues

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine all factors that contributed to the collision.

The affidavit referenced reports that officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from Benfield’s vehicle before the arrival of the responding trooper. However, the documents do not state that marijuana was found, do not confirm impairment, and do not provide results of any drug or alcohol testing.

Investigators have alleged that Benfield’s failure to observe the cyclists, maintain adequate following distance, and safely respond to roadway conditions constituted reckless conduct.

A Community Remembering Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rodgers

The loss of Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rodgers has created deep sorrow among their classmates, teammates, and everyone connected to Milligan University.
